Effectiveness of an Integrated Approach to Reduce Perinatal Mortality:Recent Experiences from Matlab, Bangladesh
AUTHOR:Rahman et al.SOURCE:BioMed Central
The authors present compelling evidence for the merit of integrating facility and community-based care in reducing perinatal mortality. As noted in the article perinatal mortality accounts for 40% of under 5 mortality (same percentage in Uganda). Their focus was on achieving the Millenium Development Goal (MDG) 4 for child survival. The article supports the need to focus on horizontal interventions, however the linkage of HIV services with maternal/reproductive services was not addressed. Life for Mothers (LfM) applauds the efforts of Rahman, et. al in achieving this reduction in perinatal mortality. LfM will also address perinatal mortality in Phase ll of its Pilot Project, but will additionally focus on maternal mortality and HIV/AIDS (MDGs--4 & 5) using an integrated and holistic strategy in rural Uganda.
